The cast of *Wozzeck* and *Chugra* includes Dimitar Voev, Georgi Marinov and Pencho Popov (Chugra). In 1981, Georgi Marinov and Pencho Popov were medical students and began playing occasionally with two acoustic guitars, mainly improvising or performing classical pieces. In 1984, Dimitar Voev and Georgi Marinov began playing jazz as a duo (bass and guitar) under the name Wozzeck (after Alban Berg’s opera “Wozzeck”). During this time, the three of them would gather at Pencho Popov’s flat, whom they gradually began to call Chugra, and quite spontaneously one evening they recorded two improvised songs using whatever instruments were to hand and Chugra’s cassette recorder. The first song recorded was called “Korenite besni laskavo stenat” (The Roots Moan Wildly and Tenderly). At the time, Voev was working as a postman and the lyrics to this song were written on a blank telegram form. Unfortunately, the cassette on which the first songs were recorded was subsequently lost.
