Groups like this don’t just happen by chance. In 1989–90, Vasil Rusev (Chaikata) – vocals and guitar, Deyan Dragiev (Dakata) – drums, and Boyan Zlatkov (Epeto) – bass, were in neighbouring classes at School No. 7. They didn’t seem to like playing in ‘school’ punk bands, because they decided to form a techno-thrash (?!?) group. Their album remains a memory solely for them from their ‘metal’ years, but things started to pick up pace and the trio’s chemistry emerged, just as the name Tumno appeared. The big explosion of alternative music in ’91 shifted their musical direction and Tumno slowly but surely formed their style… hard and heavy like heavy metal, melodic, even melancholic and depressive like the Seattle sound, and at times even wave, with an overall touch of ethnic motifs… which sets them apart from all other alternative bands, given that, in terms of sound quality, the cassette of their only released album is in no way inferior to the Western sound.
