MIZAR was formed way back in 1981 and is known for the folk and Byzantine influences in its music. The band’s founders are Gorazd Chapovski, Valentin Zabakin and Panta Dzhambazovski, who gave the band its name, which is of Arabic origin and means ‘star of the nomads’. This was MIZAR’s ‘first revelation’. In 1982, Risto Vartev became the band’s first vocalist. Zabakin left the band at this time and Iliya Stoyanoski took over as bassist. In 1985, Vartev left the band and joined the alternative rock band “Archangel”. Goran Tanevski took his place as lead singer, whilst Slobodan Stoyanovski took over on keyboards. Mizar reoriented themselves as a darkwave band. This was Mizar’s “second revelation”. Later, Goran Trajkovski became the bassist, and in 1987 Mizar were the support act for “Laibach” and the Serbian band “Disciplina Kičme” on a tour of Yugoslavia. Their first album was released in 1988 with the following line-up: Goran Tanevski – vocals, Gorazd Chapovski – guitar, Boris Georgiev – drums (from the band Badmingtons), Sasho Krastovski – bass, Katerina Velyanovska – keyboards. Mizar’s producer is Goran Lisica – Fox. Mizar have a cover version of the folk song ‘Zaydi, zaydi, yasno slantse’ under the title ‘Zlatno slantse’. Other popular songs of theirs include ‘Devoyka ot bronza’, ‘Gradut e nyam’ and ‘Mugla’. Their second album, “Sweet Dreams”, was released in 1991 and included covers of the song “Sweet Dreams” by the group Eurythmics, the folk song “1762 Summer” and “Home”. Tanevski left Mizar and was replaced by Nora Stoyanovich, but by the end of 1991 the band had split up. Tanevski became a concert promoter, Vladimir Kaevski revived his old band “Kiborg”, and Chapovski formed a new band, “Kusmet”, in Australia. In 2003, Mizar reformed and played concerts in the former Yugoslavia, with Trajkovski as lead vocalist, and released the single “Judas” with the B-side “Honourary Fire” for radio stations. Their third album, “Kobna Ubavina”, was released in 2004 by the label “Avalon Production”. This was Mizar’s “third revelation”. In 2006, Trajkovski left the band and Tanevski became the vocalist, but as a guest (“Mizar together with Goran Tanevski”). The fourth album, “A Glance at the Flower Garden”, was released in 2007 on the “Skopje Jazz Festival” label. In 2010, the only remaining member of Mizar since its formation was Chapovski, who, together with Zoran Origjanski, Pece Kitanovski and the male Byzantine choir Harmosini, released the album “The Child and the White Sea” on the “Youth Cultural Centre – Skopje” label. One member of Harmosini is Risto Solunchev from the hip-hop group “Chista Okolina”. In 2014, Mizar supported the Scottish band “Simple Minds” at a concert in the “Kale” Hall in Skopje.
